By the year 2030, there will be 78 million senior citizens which will account for 20 percent of the U.S. population. It is important for all of us to begin now to learn of foods and vitamin supplements which will help us to continue to be healthy and strong as we age. It will probably require an adjustment in our eating habits. One question to consider at this point is if it is worth it. It is amazing how the loss of our health makes us wish we had paid more attention to it earlier in our lives.

Studies have shown that partaking of beet juice will help to ward off Dementia due to the increase of blood flow to the brain. We should be willing to add beets to our daily diet. I wonder if there is some way to flavor the beet juice so it tastes better. Vitamin B12 is another vitamin supplement which we should be willing to make sure we have enough of. Studies have shown that vitamin B12 may offer additional protection from Alzheimer’s Disease.

Other supplements which we should be taking include Vitamin D for our bones. Fish Oil for our Colon. We should also be willing to take a good supplement of B Complex vitamins. Studies have shown that the B-vitamins help to stimulate our brain and offer many other enhancing benefits. Making sure we have enough zinc is also important.

It has been proven that after our mid-thirties that the ability of our bodies to absorb nutrients from the foods we eat begins to decrease. It is important that we take care of ourselves which includes the taking of vitamin supplements and an increase in exercise. Exercise is important to maintain our physical prowess and to help our bodies with the absorption of nutrients. We have a tendency to decrease our exercise, therefore a conscious effort needs to be made to counter the natural tendencies.

The vitamin B complex is one of the most important sources of vitamins that you can take. People once thought that vitamin B was all inclusive in one vitamin. Then it was discovered that there are actually several different types of vitamins included in the vitamin B family. The vitamin B complex is made up of the essential vitamins B1, B2,B3,B4,B6, B9 & B12 in addition to Biotin, Choline and Inositol. There are many different reasons to make sure you have enough vitamin B. You will have more energy, a healthy nervous system, and good digestion. In addition to this you will enjoy healthy skin, hair and nails. B vitamins are also water-soluble so you do not need to worry about how your body will dispose of them.

A good mixture of the vitamin B complex will also help fight depression, stress and cardiovascular disease. It is pretty much given that if you are low in one of the vitamin B’s then you are probably low in others. Therefore, a proper mix of vitamin B complex will serve to increase your health. I remember a nurse giving me a vitamin B12 shot to combat the flu that I had.

Liquid vitamin B is perhaps the easiest way to get your vitamin B complex. The liquid vitamin B will find its way into your system easier and faster. Your body will be able to take advantage of all the healing powers quicker. As you take liquid vitamin B complex, you will find your energy levels going up and you will begin to feel better.

Of course, any vitamin supplement may have harmful side effects if you take the incorrect mixture so it would be a good idea to consult with a professional before going too far with your supplement ingestion.

Hair loss has always been a problem for men. There are several different responses to hair loss. Some men choose to merely deal with it, some choose to wear toupee’s and still others try to find remedies to combat their hair loss.

The most prevalant form of hair loss is androgenetic alopecia (AGA), more commonly called male pattern baldness. AGA occurs in response to the body’s production of androgens, or male sex hormones. The exact mechanism is not really known or understood. Genetics seems to play a large part in the process.

Can anything really be done to fight the phenomenon? There three herbs are available to combat AGA. These are:

Biota, a tincture or scalp lotion which will thicken the existing hair and serves to prevent further baldness.

Drynaria, a tincture or scalp lotion which stimulates hair growth on portions of the scalp which are affected by AGA.

Ginkgo, which comes in tablets. Take 40 – 60 mg, two to three times daily. This serves to improve the circulation in the scalp.

You should also avoid sweets and fatty foods. A poor diet will hasten the production of insulin which accelerates AGA at the crown of the scalp.

Individuals apply sun protection creams which block UVB radiation responsible for the synthesis of vitamin D3 and the hence they may allow other sun radiations which may cause melanomas.

The required amount of vitamin D is difficult to be met from food alone and in some at-risk groups it becomes necessary to give vitamin D-fortified food, or expose them to sunlight in other way. Various at risk groups for vitamin D inadequacy include several complications due to lack of Vitamin D.

Poor intake of calcium rich food encompassing poor intake of milk especially by the young women of reproductive age group, it reduced concentration of vitamin D and calcium. Augmentation in the use of sun block lotions along with the diminished exposure to sun to avert the chances of skin cancer, this is also one of the reasons of vitamin D insufficiency. Human milk is meager in vitamin D, in the present era there is enhanced predominance in the duration of breast- feeding. This is ensuing insufficient intake of vitamin D, thus causing low circulation of 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations among women.

Due to air pollution in industrial areas, the exposure to uv- radiation is reduced, as well as the poor dietary habits and availability of vitamin D equipped food. This makes the individual a victim of vitamin D deficiency, in rare cases impaired absorption, and enhances body requirement of vitamin D, or enhanced excretion or stringent practice of vegetarianism leads to vitamin D deficiency. In some Arabian countries it is mandatory for women to wear long robes for religious purpose, it is done so their exposure to sun is reduced leading to insufficiency of vitamin D.

Vitamin D is responsible for forming and sustaining good health of bones. It is done by increasing absorption of calcium from intestine and depositing calcium in bones and maintains optimal BMD or Bone Mineral Density. Diminished absorption of calcium is related to vitamin D, thereby resulting in loss of bone or enhanced chances of osteoporosis, a situation depicting low BMD. Osteoporosis makes the bone fragile making the individual vulnerable to fractures.

It is reported) that vitamin D deficiency causes various bone related anomalies like osteopenia, osteoporosis apart from osteomalacia. Resulting in further weakening of muscles and hence exacerbating the risk of falls and fractures, under such conditions the recommended dose must be increased to 1000 IU/d.

Recommendations for reducing fracture risk with vitamin D and calcium based on clinical studies. While giving the vitamin D supplements, mostly it is accompanied by calcium in order to obtain the desired results. It was concluded that the combined supplementation of both vitamin D3 and calcium in elderly patient aged 62-85yrs, according to a research study. This resulted in a decrease in the jeopardy of an individual’s falls, fractures, the bone loss within elderly population, the dose of vitamin D was given as 700-800 IU/day and calcium was given as 500-1200 IU/day.

It is now clearly understood the significance and pivotal role that vitamin D. It holds in retaining the good health of bone, a number of studies and surveys have been carried out, which strengthen this fact even more.

WHO has recommended intake dose of vitamin D by individuals belonging to different group, up to the age of 50 years, during pregnancy and lactation the requirement is 200 IU/d, for the age group from 51-65 years it is 400 IU/D for the age of 65+ the requirement exceeds to 600 IU/d (Vitamin D sources- Foods with Vitamin D).

This treatment is effective in reducing the danger of fractures related to hip fractures or other kind of fractures in community-living patients. If it is produced in higher quantity, the enzyme aids in the degradation of active vitamin D (Holick, 2004).

It is also documented that 1,25(OH)2D can depress the activity of 1 –Ohase. The parathyroid hormone (PTH) can stimulate this activity, extra renal tissues also express the 1 –Ohase. These encompass tissues of bone osteoclasts, tissues of skin, macrophages, placenta, and tissues of colon, tissues of brain, tissues of prostate, endothelial tissue, and glandular tissues of parathyroid. Extra renal formation of 1,25(OH)2D3 might participate in the differentiation and proliferation of cell and also in immune response, 1,25(OH)2D3 is essential for various physiological processes apart from its well-known function in calcium metabolism.

It is also essential to enhance calcium and phosphorus uptake from the intestine, it assists in the oscillation of calcium ions between bone and blood. Vitamin D is essential component for all age groups. During infant to childhood stage it plays an essential role in bone development or else its deficiency results in bone deformation and rickets, in adults its deficiency results in softness of bone leading to osteomalacia.
