Causes of Vitamin Deficiency

Back when we were in grade school we were taught along with the ever famous food group triage, the different disease that come along with vitamin deficiency. For example we remember that vitamin C deficiency results to scurvy and vitamin D deficiency results to rickets. Even though taking multivitamins is a fad today, there are still cases of vitamin deficiency striking the different parts of the globe.

Sad but true, there are quite a handful of situations wherein a person can develop vitamin deficiency. One of the most common causes of vitamin deficiency is not eating enough fruits and vegetables. You might think that people in poverty are the only ones affected by this but it’s a fact that only 25% of Americans eat the prescribed amount of fruits and vegetables in a day. So we can see that although environment and socioeconomic status plays a big role regarding vitamin consumption, it is after all the individual’s choice.

Another group of people prone to developing vitamin deficiency are those that are under a lot of stress since the body uses a lot of vitamins and minerals for the synthesis of stress hormones. Those who are anorexic or ill who have lost appetite are also at risk. The University of California found out that people with asthma have low magnesium intake.

There are so many situations that can lead to vitamin deficiency but we must always remember that all vitamin deficiencies are preventable diseases. With the proper choice of diet and supplement , one is assured to maintain a sound mind and a healthy body.
